What is a cabin air filter, and when should I change it?

Even if you don't roll up your windows much, particulates could get inside your vehicle while you are driving. How can you protect yourself against such elements? Your cabin air filter. Modern vehicles have a cabin air filter that filters the air entering the vehicle's cabin. This is why the name.

These particulates include dust, dirt, and debris from pets, as well as pollen, tobacco smoke, and other potentially dangerous irritants. These particulates can cause discomfort in your driving experience, and they can be more dangerous if your respiratory condition is severe or you are allergic. These particles are caught in the cabin air filters, which keep the air clean and fresh. (Even though your vehicle may not be equipped with one, it might have an area to house one.)

There are many filters available that simply capture these particulates. However, some filters like the Electrostatic and Charcoal filters can go further than this by eliminating others.

Air filters in cabins will need to be replaced as per the manufacturer's instructions. This is because they are subject to wear and tear. These windows are determined by the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, which may need to adjust depending on how the vehicle operates. If the air quality in urban areas is poor, dusty and desert-like, or heavily populated, it might be necessary to replace the cabin filter once a year.

You should find directions in your owner's guide on where and how to change the cabin air filter. Your cabin filter is usually located behind your vehicle's dashboard or in the glove box. Some filters, however, are under the hood, so they may not be as easily accessible.

Most cabin air filter user manuals will tell you to check your filter at least once per year. However, you should consider changing your filter if there are any odors/pollen coming in or if your air is not blowing as hard as usual.

Although it is not always possible, changing the cabin air filter can be done quickly. It takes between 5 to 10 minutes in most cases.
